About the vaccine

  • You should receive the vaccine at least two weeks before travel if you have not been fully vaccinated or need a booster.

  • The course consists of a primary series of three doses, usually given in childhood.

  • A booster dose is recommended every 10 years if you are travelling to a high-risk area.

  • An injection in the upper arm.

  • Side effects can include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, headache, and fatigue.

  • The vaccine is part of the routine childhood immunisation schedule and is suitable from infancy.

  • Practise good hygiene, including handwashing and wound care, to reduce the risk of infection.

  • Risk if you contract polio, diphtheria, or tetanus:

    • Polio can cause paralysis and lifelong disability.

    • Diphtheria can lead to severe breathing difficulties, heart failure, and nerve damage.

    • Tetanus causes painful muscle stiffness and spasms, which can be life-threatening.
