About the vaccine

  • You should get vaccinated at least two weeks before travel, especially if visiting areas with a high risk of meningococcal disease.

  • The course consists of a single dose.

  • A booster dose may be recommended after five years if you remain at risk.

  • An injection in the upper arm.

  • Side effects can include redness or swelling at the injection site, mild fever, headache, and tiredness.

  • The vaccine is suitable for children over the age of six weeks.

  • Practise good hygiene, such as regular handwashing and avoiding close contact with infected individuals in high-risk areas.

  • Meningitis can cause severe brain and spinal cord inflammation, leading to complications such as brain damage, hearing loss, and death if untreated.
