Measles, Mumps, and Rubella Vaccination

About the vaccine

  • You should receive the vaccine at least two weeks before travel if you have not been fully vaccinated.

  • The course consists of two doses, given at least four weeks apart.

  • No further boosters are required after completing the two-dose course.

  • An injection in the upper arm.

  • Side effects can include mild fever, rash, temporary joint pain, and soreness at the injection site.

  • The vaccine is suitable for children over the age of one, with the second dose given before school age.

  • Avoid close contact with infected individuals in areas where measles, mumps, or rubella outbreaks are common.

  • Risk if you contract measles, mumps, or rubella:

    • Measles can cause fever, rash, cough, and complications such as pneumonia and brain inflammation.

    • Mumps can lead to painful swelling of the salivary glands, fever, and in some cases, meningitis or infertility.

    • Rubella is usually mild but can cause serious birth defects if contracted during pregnancy.
